✶ INSPIRATION
There’s no question Mandy as a whole taps into the brutal world of “metal” in every aspect of the word. Especially the critical moment where Red is forging The Beast. The film logo itself is enough to turn even the most hardened, fanatical Norwegian Black Metal admirer into a doe-eyed, mushy mess with it's deft design.
The inclusion of Lizzie the Tiger in what I believe to be the most transcendent interaction between characters, Red and The Chemist, was utterly breathtaking. I immediately knew I had to feature Lizzie as the centerpiece of my artwork. Lizzie was an ethereal creature seemingly out of place yet exactly right where she needed to be. The film slowed down for what felt like an infinite amount of time and gave you a chance to catch your breath.
I wanted to embody the visual of 80's metal posters taped to bedroom walls with no bare wall left to be seen. Gritty textures reminiscent of your first try at screen printing in a friend's garage, flashy neons that take you back to making your way to seeing a band at some hole-in-the-wall venue but was the closest thing to home you had, and Lizzie at the forefront- aggressive yet gorgeous. This is the poster you find crumbled amongst a pile of empty cans after leaving a concert. Questionably stained and creased, but surviving the chaotic aftermath of a heavy metal parking lot. It will serve as cherished reminder of a night you never want to forget.
